Why Queer Couples Deserve a Queer Celebrant

Being LGBTQ+ friendly and being LGBTQ+ are two different things. Here's what lived experience actually looks like in a ceremony.

Heading

It matters who represents you, and articulates your love story on your wedding day.

Who you select as your wedding vendors says a lot about your personality, your values, and your style. They are a reflection of who you are as a couple.

But choosing your Celebrant and MC? That is one of the most important decisions you’ll make.

Because we aren't just there to stand at the front and read a script. We are trusted with something much bigger: how your relationship is introduced, understood and celebrated in front of the people who matter most.

When my NB wife and I planned our own biracial queer wedding, I worried about the same things many of my couples tell me now. Would the celebrant really get it? Would we have to explain ourselves? Would the ceremony feel like ours, or like a slightly adjusted version of somebody else's?

It's what propelled me into this new career …

When you work with me, you’re not starting from scratch.

As a queer person who has spent the last 15 years working within queer culture and communities, there’s an incredible amount of shorthand that happens in our conversations. You don’t always have to explain the reference, the dynamic, the nuance, the language - or why something matters to you. I just get it.

And that translates directly into your ceremony.

It means I can take all those little things you tell me - the things you might not even realise are significant - and weave them into your script in a way that feels completely natural. It’s felt in the room on the wedding day, too.

Because when we’re in tune, our energy aligns. You feel understood, I know where you’re coming from, and there’s a level of trust and ease between us that allows me to really get you.

And honestly? That makes for a pretty magical connection - both in the lead-up to your wedding and when we’re standing together in the room on the day itself.

To Trad - Or Not to Trad …

Your wedding should feel like your relationship, not an adapted version of somebody else’s (or a Cis/ Het) idea of what a wedding is supposed to be.

For queer couples, that can be especially important. There’s something powerful about having a queer celebrant who understands that your love story might not have been ‘boy meets girl, falls in love, happily ever after’.

A queer wedding isn’t necessarily about removing tradition. It’s about creating new ones, choosing what feels meaningful to you - and leaving the rest behind.

And a queer celebrant understands that the details matter. I have an entire deck of Fabulous Rituals & Elements that you can include in your wedding - ask me for it!

Maybe you’re two brides who don’t want to be called “the girls”. Maybe you’re two grooms who couldn’t care less about cutting a cake. Maybe you’re non-binary, trans, gender-fluid, poly, blending your families, bringing children into the ceremony, or maybe none of your bio family is attending.

Perhaps you simply want a modern wedding ceremony that feels personal rather than performative and culturally inappropriate.

But being a queer wedding celebrant isn't just about identity. It’s about experience, instinct and perspective.
